Mandarin Duck

(Alx galericulata)

Usually known simply as Mandarin, the dazzling drakes are every bit as stunning as their American counterpart. Averaging slightly over a pound, males are best known for their strange orange "side whiskers" and curious dorsal orange gold "sails" that extends up along the flanks. The Asian Population was estimated at 70,000 ducks in 1992, of which 15,000 were residents in China, 5,000 in Russia, and 50,000 in Japan.
